Izmir Cup Finale Goes Down to the Wire

The final round of the Izmir Autocross Cup was organised by the Aydın Automobile Sports Club on Sunday 9 October at the Izmir Menderes autocross track. Run over 5 laps of the 800-metre dirt-and-concrete circuit, the event was held in three separate categories.

In Category 1, track record holder Alper Akgün set the fastest time again to take the win, and also claimed the TSYD Izmir Branch Cup. Dinçer Akgün, 4 seconds behind Alper Akgün, finished second, while Burak Güngör, who is improving with every outing, took third.

Category 2 favourite Yiğit Yalçın, from Bursa, still managed to take the winner's cup despite a brake failure on the car. Cem Doğrular, 16, who began a motorsport career at this event, took a very strong second in Category 2. Hüseyin Teloğlu completed the race in third, 9 seconds behind Doğrular. Gizem Görgün Başar, who finished fifth in this category, won the ladies' cup. Bahadır Sevinç, who went into the final as Category 2 leader, rolled his car and failed to finish.

In Category 3, in a battle between the legendary Fiat 131 and Ford Escort cars, Göktuğ Tuncay won and Tibet Arbak was second in their Fiat 131s, while Mithat Diker took third in a Ford Escort MK2.
The class finishers received their cups from Aydın Automobile Sports Club President Kuvvet Erim. Speaking at the trophy ceremony, Kuvvet Erim said: “We are continuing our efforts to increase the number of competitors without slowing down. It was a very good event thanks to Mithat Diker's financial and moral support for the Izmir Cup, and I thank him.”
